Something Like Art

View From This Side’ – 2026

I have a collection of over 3000 discarded 35mm colour slides – another example of the ‘life document detritus’ that simply gets junked, overlooked and disregarded. The slides, often Kodachrome or Agfacrhome, cover the usual topics one would expect – holidays, outdoor vistas, family occasions, plants, flowers, pets, modes of transport, buildings, and even snapshots of past TV programmes – the list goes on. On their own, most are unremarkable; however, something interesting can occur when two 35mm colour slides are combined. The images here are slides overlaid on each other. Sometimes it works, other times it’s less successful.

I am exhibiting my piece ‘Snapshots in the Garden’. An 8×4 presentation of discarded vintage garden photography (photographs mounted on wood). It’s at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, and the full exhibition is curated by the artists Gary Bratchford and Stuart Whipps. Here are some images of the set-up.
